Member Update: The City Stayed Home. We Didn’t.
Alliance Members,
Last night at Site 1 Brewing, we filled every seat in the house. While we were there together sharing stories of sewage backups, broken water mains, and zero-notice street closures, not a single representative from the City showed up.
Their absence says more than their letters ever could. Here is the path forward:
1. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Protest
The relocation of the parade is the perfect example of how this construction has pushed the community aside. Last night, we discussed a coordinated presence at the parade this Saturday, and the support was overwhelming.
- Sign-Making Party: This Thursday, March 12, from 4–7 PM at Addy’s Downtown. Addy’s is donating pizza to the cause. Come help us turn our frustration into the signs that will grab the city’s attention and help bolster our cause.
- Saturday's Parade: We will be congregating around the parking garages adjacent to the parade route to have our message seen by the most attendees. Below is a map of the route, along with three stars that show where we will have people stationed along with flyers you can pass out to parade-goers. We will begin gathering at 10 AM ahead of the parade's 11 AM start time.
2. Fiscal Sponsorship: Speed over Red Tape
We have decided to move forward with a fiscal sponsor rather than forming our own 501(c)(3). Currently, the IRS lead time for new non-profits exceeds 12 months which is time we simply do not have. This partnership allows us to begin fundraising and advocacy efforts immediately under an established legal umbrella.
3. The March 18th Deadline
Next Wednesday, March 18, is our second meeting with Mayor Ewing. This is the City’s final opportunity to present a meaningful plan for financial mitigation, safety, and navigation.
- The Escalation: After the meeting we are heading directly to the steps of City Hall for a press conference. If the Mayor fails to deliver on Wednesday we are bypassing local government and taking our case to the State level. I have already contacted Governor Pillen to request he take our call live on camera to discuss emergency state intervention.
What we need from you:
- Thursday: Sign making party at Addy's downtown from 4-7 PM. Addy's will be donating pizza, bring beer money. Some sign-making supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
- Saturday: Gather at one of the three spots on the parade map below at 10 AM.
- Next Wednesday: Keep your eyes peeled for more information about the City Hall press conference.
The City wants us to wait. We’re done waiting.
In solidarity,
Clark Ross
